Learners from all grades brought their projects, prepared their display areas, and waited for the judges' and parents' questions, evaluations, and critiques. The works put on display featured paintings, artwork, and crafts created by PPS learners who have been busy preparing since the beginning of this academic year, in addition to independent guided projects in Math and Science. From paintings and portraits to papier maché models, learners at PPS are producing a wealth of creative content. The Art fair was a highly rewarding experience for children who delight in seeing their painting and artwork displayed for all to see. The fair managed to bring the best out of the children and involve the parents in a way that very few other events can. Visitors enjoyed more than 300 works of art. Different themes were reflected in the works of learners from kindergarten through grade 11. The fair included drawings, landscape and seascape paintings, portraits, collages, prints, abstract art, fashion design, mixed media, two-dimensional and three-dimensional constructions, socks puppets, designed vases, pop art and a lot of craftwork. Participating in the science fair was an enjoyable way for learners to find out how to conduct experiments in order to solve problems. The PPS science fair was not quite like the other science fairs. While models and modeling are important to science, we at PPS did not encourage learners to display models of such things as volcanoes and the solar system, or conduct simple research. Instead, we encouraged them to ask questions and then to set up experiments to answer those questions. In this way, they learned to approach science as scientists do. And this is what the judges' evaluation was based on. Creative ability, scientific thought, thoroughness, skill, and clarity were sought. In this sense, many projects were of high standard but did not have enough creativity and scientific thinking to qualify as top scorers. Some projects were merely a 'copy-paste' type that did not involve any skill or critical thinking on the part of the learners. However, the winners applied the scientific method to develop an understanding of controls and variables, and they took an open and creative approach to problem solving. They also developed public speaking skills as they presented their projects to classmates and judges. The top three winners in the three categories will be given medals, in addition to trophies given to the first place winners in all categories. |
